Several other types of ends are less aesthetic. A pinhead refers to the widening of a wall segment at its open end. If well built, the pinhead suggests the intentional strengthening of the end for a barway or gate. If merely a wider pile or stack of stones, the pinhead suggests that stones were being disposed of from a vehicle on a cartway or lane; sometimes the pile has even grown to bury the original end. Related to a pinhead is a flap—an opening in a formerly continuous wall where the stones were simply pushed or moved out of the way to create a road or trail. Flaps usually come in pairs, both ends pointing toward the direction in which the wall was pushed open. Two long flaps suggest that the gap was bulldozed into existence.
